What ever was a stumbling block for me is described in these documents.
Alerts
Alerts are how you tell when a team member has contributed to your project.  If you want to stay in tune with your project peers- then turn alerts on!

Go to SiteSettings/MyAlertsOnThisSite to add alerts.
  • Yes, you must add one at a time! (Sorry)
  • No, you cannot turn alerts on for your contributors-- they must do so themselves.  However---  you can (as an Administrator) see who has turned alerts on!

Go to -------SiteSettings/GoToSiteAdministration/ManageUserAlerts

You need a picture.
It really helps if you have picture on your site-- for site  recognition purposes.  Put it in the Document Library titled "Infrastructure_Items_used_on_this_site_and_child_sites".
  • Go to this Doc Lib (it is hidden-- find it in DocumentsAndLists)
  • Upload the jpeg
  • Snag the URL of the image.
  • Open the Image Web Part and paste the URL
  • Done
Have your team members import themselves!

It is VERY useful to have complete contact information for all team members.

  • Go to the "Contacts" list in left side Quick Launch pane and Import your team (do not type!).

Importing Email Groups is possible!

Rename the 2 Document Libraries and-- PERMISSION THEM
Rename the Doc Libs--
  • Click the doc lib
  • Click ModifySettingsAndColumns, on bottom left
  • Click ChangeGeneralSettings
